Nepalese handmade Lokta paper is made from the fibrous inner bark extracted from high elevation evergreen shrubs. Botanically known as Daphne Bhoula or Daphne Papyracea, it is an indigenous plant available in mountain region of Nepal. It is now widely known as Lokta bushes in both Nepal and globally. It grows at the altitude of 6,500 feet to 9,500 feet from the sea level especially in the lap of Mt. Everest, the world’s tallest peak and other famous mountains in Nepal. Lokta plant is harvested by cutting its stems or branches without destroying the main root. Lokta regenerates naturally within 2 to 3 years of plantation. Lokta can be harvested without causing any adverse impact to the forest ecology of the mountain.
One of the two types of Lokta plants from which the paper is made. The outer bark is stripped off and the fibrous inner bark is used to make the paper.
Use of Lokta Paper
Traditionally government of Nepal offices used it to keep the records of important documents because of its durability and its virtue of resistance to tearing, mold and insect infestation. Lokta Paper has been produced in the country for hundred years using traditional technology and know how.
In the 1980s the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Agricultural Development Bank of Nepal/Small Farmer Development Program (ADBN/SFDP) launched the Community Development and Health Project (CDHP) to resuscitate Nepal's indigenous cottage industries making papers.
With the growing popularity of Lokta Paper in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Nepalese social and environmental entrepreneurs made attempts to gain support from international trading partners for its expansion in a sustainable way. With this initiation a ground for establishment of exports of handmade Lokta Paper was laid. Recently, GTZ and the European Commission are also active in promoting its market to the developed countries. They have extended their support to promote Lokta Paper.Their conviction is that it has been supporting for the generation of employment opportunities to the people living under poverty line in the mountain region.
Apart from the Lokta we focus to produce paper using waste from the garment industries such as cotton rags, used papers and off cuts paper from printing press as the key raw materials of the paper sheets.
Agricultural wastes like banana plants, straws, water hyacinth available in ponds and local small rivers, fern leaves, bamboo leaves, fallen off flower petals, fresh flower petals, wooden dust , sparkle mica flecks of stones, corn husk etc are used to create a pattern and marvelous design on the paper sheets .
Papers are hand-lifted and then put for sun drying .Papers are sun dried, a technology which is adopted without harming the environment. We make the papers in different colors in line with the demands of our clients.
UPC uses Pantone book reference to dye the paper sheets to become more professional.
